   physician, physiologist
   Born in Paris, Alfred Vulpian was a professor of anatomy and comparative pathology and was interested in the physiology of the nervous system. in 1866, he identified sclerosis in platelets and gave his name to the condition of progressive muscular atrophy. in discovering an active agent in the veins (1856), he made the first biomedical confirmation of a hormonal secretion as well as demonstrating functional anatomy. Vulpian was named to the Academy of Sciences in 1867.
